Electric Propulsion System

It is a system that supplies the main power source of a ship by operating electricity and batteries alone or in parallel.
It consists of Power Management System (PMS) that controls the power generated by the generator, Energy Management System (EMS) to monitor and control the generated power, a power inverter for hotel loads that supplies power to loads in ships, an inverter driver that supplies power to the propulsion motor and compact, high-performance Rim Driven thruster.
Currently, KTE is carrying out the 'development of electric propulsion driveways and mobile power supply system' and 'commercialization of LPG electric propulsion system for small and medium-sized ships'. Through these projects, we are conducting R&D to secure an 'Electric Propulsion System Package' solution that includes all thrusters in the future.

DC-MSBD Package with PMS
∙ PMS (Power Management System) main functions
1) PMS is installed in the switchboard and monitors and controls the status of power sources connected to the main bus
- Monitoring and alarm judgment of generator and battery frequency, voltage, current, power, etc.
2) Monitor and control the state of the motor generator battery / bus tie circuit breaker connected to the main bus
3) Load control of generator and battery according to main bus load condition
- Generator Governor Control
- PCS control for battery charging and discharging

Console with EMS
∙ EMS (Energy Management System) main functions
1) EMS is installed in the Bridge Console and monitors the status of power system equipment (switchboard, PMS, generator, BMS, hotel load inverter, propulsion motor inverter)
2) Display the status of the circuit breakers on the inverter side of the generator battery bus tie/ hotel load inverter propulsion motor inverter and OPEN/CLOSE control operation command in the switchboard
3) Inverter speed control and monitoring according to propulsion motor operation mode and main bus power status
4) Power operation mode generator priority or battery priority support for efficient operation of power sources such as generators and batteries
5) Operation status display of major equipment, history management, alarm management, trend management

Rim Driven Propulsion
∙ A type of propeller in which a fixed pitch type propeller and a permanent magnet type motor are directly coupled to the nozzle
∙ Motor – Direct propeller drive
∙ Combined with the swivel structure to provide excellent steering performance
∙ Simplified propulsion system such as shaft system and rudder, which is advantageous for securing space
